Weimar – Culture in the “Green Heart of Germany”

Most of the people hearing the name “Weimar” start to think about Weimar. To begin with Goethe and Schiller, the most famous personalities in Weimar. Some might know Bach, Liszt, Herder, Wieland, Gropius, van der Velde – they all have been living here. The question is: What makes all these famous people moving to Weimar? This city has a special indescribable atmosphere. The geographical location plays an important role, as Weimar is right in the heart of Germany, well accessible from all directions just in the middle of the two Thuringian metropolis Erfurt and Jena, the 45.000 inhabitants of Weimar enjoy an extensive cultural life.

First of all “Deutsches Nationaltheater” (German National Theatre) that didn’t only made cultural but also political history as the first german democracy, the “Weimarer Republik” (Weimar Republic) was established there in 1919. A large number of museums, cinemas, restaurants and cafés invite visitors all year round – Weimar is culture all along the line!

But despite of the comparable small size of the city two universities have their home in Weimar: The “Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt” (Franz Liszt School of Music) and the “Bauhaus University Weimar”, famous for their architects and construction engineers since the 1950’s in the German Democratic Republic. Approximately 5.000 students provide the city a young and vibrant mood, especially during the week. But the times of the poets and philosophers are over, the future of the city are the students. Unfortunately there is hardly any economic driving force despite of tourism, leading to a lack of middle-class workers and long-term perspectives for young people. The biggest part of the population are old people.

I enjoy living in Weimar and studying at the Bauhaus University especially because of the familiar and quite atmosphere in town and in school. My course Media Informatics started with 65 students in October 2009, around 25 remained until the second semester. The dropout rate in the last years in this course was about 80%, the worst of all in Weimar. But I am on a good way to belong to the 20% and I am planning on earning my bachelor degree in summer 2013.

Outside school I am working for the “Bauhaus Film Institut” , I am in charge of the finances for the “Filmfest Weimar 2010″ (Weimar 2010 Film Festival). Additionally I play handball in the University squad and go swimming. My freetime acitivities in summer will be driving my racebike through the hills of Thuringia and going jogging in the beautiful Ilm-Park in Weimar.
